A Photo Gallery: Event Hoppin' in Lexington
On Saturday, August 20, no one who lives in Lexington should’ve uttered the words, “There’s nothing to do today” because there were plenty of happenings around town.
The Cory Holt Foundation held its fourth annual Back to School Giveaway and Scholarship Fundraiser at Lexington Senior High School. The event was co-sponsored by Elevation Church and Backyard Coals.
Volunteers handed out bookbags, supplies, hygiene kits and natural hair products. Kids in attendance had plenty of options for entertainment. There was an oversized Connect Four game, cornhole, sidewalk chalk, snowcones and popcorn.
At Breeden Amphitheater, Lexington Christian Fellowship Church hosted their eighth annual school supply giveaway with a twist. Pastor Robert Hill noted that this year the church wanted to expand their reach so they decided to have the event uptown and call it a community day. They enlisted support from fellow churches, non-profit organizations, business owners and food vendors.
It was a family friendly event as there was something for various ages to enjoy. Kids were seen hula hooping and dancing to music provided by DJ Al. Adults enjoyed italian ices and homemade ice cream.
Near the county line, Yadkin Star Baptist Church held their first annual Fisher of Men’s Camp Meeting. Lauded by Rev. Dr. Timothy Williams as ”a Godly day of fellowship, food and fun”, the day featured an array of speakers, healthcare representatives, free hot dogs, food trucks and activities for children.
Since the meeting began in the morning and commenced in the evening, attendees were able to drop in throughout the day to hear from speakers and singers.
To round out the day, the Black Butterfly Network had their final installment in their Outdoor Summer Movie Series at Bull City Ciderworks. Mahogany starring Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams was the featured film. The showing was made possible by Women AdvaNCe and was co-sponsored by Davidson Local.
Before the movie began, there was a dance party that had people up on their feet and moving in their chairs.. Those in attendance were able to purchase food, visit vendors and grab a swag bag. There was also a fashion show where “Madonna Girl” was declared the winner.
All events were free.
