On July 5, 2024, at approximately 8:55 a.m., the South Lexington Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 4138 Old Mountain Rd in Lexington.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-family home heavily involved in fire. Firefighters quickly learned that two victims had escaped the home with one victim receiving burns before being rescued by her son.

Davidson County Emergency Services provided medical care having the victim airlifted to the hospital. Sadly, as a result of injuries sustained from the fire, the burn victim passed away last Friday night.

Due to high temperatures and concerns of heat exhaustion over 30 firefighters responded to the incident. Responding departments include the Central Fire Department, Linwood Fire Department, Silver Valley Fire Department, Tyro Fire Department, City of Lexington Fire Department, Denton Fire Department and the Davidson County Fire Marshals Office to help control the fire just before 11 a.m.

At the moment, the Davidson County Fire Investigation Task Force is investigating to determine the cause of the fire. During this investigation, multiple reports of an explosion were brought to the attention of investigators. It has been determined that the explosion was caused by an oxygen tank in the house, and it was not related to the cause of the fire.
