Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk

Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk

Dear Friends,

The North Carolina General Assembly has spent this week staying busy and making history. You can read all of my updates on what has been happening, as well as local news, below!

Tuesday marked the first reading of Senate Bill 258 - 2023 Appropriations Act. This bill is more commonly known as the Senate Budget Bill, which we have been diligently crafting the entirety of this session. The second reading and debate took place on Wednesday evening where we saw numerous amendments offered on the bill. The third, and final, reading of the budget bill took place Thursday morning and passed with bipartisan support. The passing of Senate Bill 258 is only the beginning of the budget process. The bill will move to the House where they will rebuttal with their comments, concerns, and amendments they want to make to our version. This will begin the conversation and debate on the state budget.

Another monumental event happened Tuesday — the overturning of the Governor's veto of Senate Bill 20 - Care for Women, Children, and Families Act. The bill protects the lives of unborn children, provides funding and valuable resources to expecting mothers, and further support for families. With this bill, unborn children's God-given right to life is further protected and valued, while keeping abortions safe and rare. I can not say thank you enough to all of my constituents and North Carolinians who showed up in support of life.

As you know, I am a huge supporter of law enforcement professionals. I want to give a shout out to those who keep our communities and families safe during National Police Week. I am deeply grateful for your dedication and sacrifices.

We have an amazing opportunity coming up this week if you are interested in everything we are doing here in Raleigh. Our Lexington Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a breakfast for everyone to come out and ask questions and eat some good food. You can find more information on that below!

High school sports is currently in the midst of playing their playoff and championship games! We want to extend a special congratulations to all of the teams who have either secured a title or are still in the running for one!

Monday was Bring Your Legislator to School Day. I, along with other legislators, had the opportunity to travel to Thomasville Middle School to listen to students speak on their most pressing issues they are facing.

Also in recent Thomasville news, I had the privilege of attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Thomasville Aquatic Center. This is a great addition to the community! You can read more about the opening and the aquatic center in the sections below.

One of Davidson County's very own, Salem Ward, is a recipient of the NC State Fair Youth Livestock Scholarship. She is one of 31 students to receive the scholarship, which is available to students enrolled in a higher education institution and have previously participated in the junior livestock or market turkey shows at the N.C. State Fair.

Ashley Furniture Industries has partnered with Davie County Schools in support of their annual Arts Smart Festival held on Saturday, May 6 at Davie High School, which included a $10,000 donation towards the event. Ashley has been a proud supporter and partner of Davie County Schools Arts Smart since 2014.

On this week's Discovering the District, we are traveling to Uptown Lexington's Historic District to see the Davidson County Historical Museum. You can read all about the museum in the section below.

If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at (919) 733-5743.

I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!
