Press Release: Davidson County Schools exceeds academic growth

The North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction released 2022-2023 state test data and school performance grades today, which are calculated from various data including how much academic growth students made last school year. The released test data showed that 74% of Davidson County Schools (26 out of 35 schools) met or exceeded student growth, which was an increase from 57% in 2021-2022. Elementary schools saw an increase in math proficiencies across all grade levels and an increase in reading proficiencies in grades three and four. Fair Grove Elementary increased proficiency in all subjects at all grade levels.

Middle schools saw an increase in reading proficiencies in grades six and seven across the district. South Middle increased in reading and math across all grade levels. In our high schools, 8 out of 10 schools increased Biology proficiency and 9 out of 10 increased Math 3 proficiency, both for the second year in a row. Davidson County High School increased proficiency in every subject area. In addition, Davidson County Schools high school ACT composite score went up 3 points and the four-year cohort graduation rate remained about the same at 84.2%.

The state also issues A-F school performance letter grades to individual schools. 82% of the schools in Davidson County (29 out of 35 schools) received a school grade of A, B, or C; which was an increase from 77% in 2021-2022. Five schools in Davidson County exited the Low Performing designation: Brier Creek Elementary, Denton Elementary, Fair Grove Elementary, Southmont Elementary, and Tyro Elementary.

Davidson County Schools is very pleased with the improvement in proficiency and growth data. We are extremely proud of the hard work and commitment within our schools to improve student performance and especially in the schools that exited low performing status. These positive results reflect the high expectations of our teachers, administrators, and parents. In Davidson County Schools, student learning is paramount and we continually use data to inform instructional decisions to ensure all students are on a path to success.
