NAACP to host voting rally service, Sunday

As early voting begins, the Davidson County Chapter of the NAACP will host a special service to encourage citizens to vote in the 2023 elections. The service will take place on Sunday, October 22nd at 2 pm at St. Stephen United Methodist Church, 100 E 1st Street, Lexington NC. The event is free and open to the general public.

Several candidates will speak during the rally, according to Reverend Alan Suber, Vice President of NAACP. St. Stephen, a 155-year-old congregation, has a long history of working with the NAACP and voting rights.

Suber called the event “non-partisan” with a focus on the importance of driving voter turnout. “This election will determine whether the city continues to move forward in a positive way, or regress backwards,” Suber said. “Therefore, this event is important to ensure that everyone, particularly minority communities, understand the importance of voting in this election and know what’s needed in order for them to vote at the polls.”

Suber, along with President Charles Clark, points to decreased voter turnout in non-presidential election years.

“The NAACP has always advocated for citizens to get out and vote in every election, especially our African American citizens. We’ve always been a resource for citizens to understand the voting process and the duties & responsibilities of the political offices that are on the ballot for election,” Suber said. “Therefore, this event though may be its first, or one of few; however, it’s a continuation of what we’ve always done as a community service advocacy group.”

Davidson Local was unable to confirm an official list of speakers.
