Workforce Development: Joel's Job Tips

Workforce Development: Joel's Job Tips

Never before has it been so easy to find a job. However, getting a job may not be easy for those not prepared or connected.

Below are some tips to consider for Davidson County students hoping to secure employment in the future:

With so many advanced manufacturing jobs coming to North Carolina, more students need to realize it's ok not to play in the NFL, NBA, or be a You Tube star. They can be a part of the manufacturing job boom underway in the Common Core region of North Carolina, reside at home and commute to thousands of new and current jobs.

Are you familiar with the term vacuum jobs? Once Toyota EV starts hiring their anticipated 5000 employees, Boom Supersonic starts hiring the anticipated 1600, NUCOR Steel starts hiring the anticipated 200 workers, Vinfast, an auto parts suppliers in Sanford/ Pittsboro area of Chatham County, starts hiring the anticipated 15,000, Eli Lilly starts hiring the 600 anticipated new workers,  all of these new jobs are going to cause a vacuum by absorbing workers from our current NC employers. This has the potential to destabilize our region and perhaps cause the departure or closure for existing companies. We need more advanced manufacturing workers to meet the needs.

For those in high school, enroll into the classes at Davidson-Davie Community College. Due to a state law passed under former Governor Pat McCrory era, students can take classes at the community college for free while in high school. I encourage them to take as many CTE courses and start getting your 10 or 30 hour certification cards from OSHA. Apprenticeship programs need to be expanded so more underserved students are admitted.

More students should become interested in finding out what employers need for them to learn and not just take classes that are of their current interest but have limited jobs available upon completion of the class.
