Child succumbs to injuries sustained in crash, driver charged

LEXINGTON, NC – The Lexington Police Department is providing several updates on the traffic crash  involving juveniles on June 21. Brenner’s Hospital staff notified investigators that, early this morning,  the 8-year-old succumbed to their injuries sustained from the collision and has died. The 3-year-old  remains in critical condition at Brenner’s Hospital. Whitaker received a $500 secured bond when she  was arrested for DWI and driving while her license was revoked. She has since posted bond and was  released from jail. Whitaker’s court date is July 20 in Lexington District Court. 

In response to several questions, the following is some additional information about the case. Two  children in the car were Whitaker’s children, and two were not. The children’s ages are 3, 4, 8, and 15.  The 3 and 4-year-old belong to Whitaker. Investigators continue to update the district attorney’s office  and work closely with their staff as they continue this ongoing investigation.
