The Davidson County Health Department has received notification, from the State Laboratory of Public Health, confirming the sixth laboratory confirmed rabies case this year in Davidson County. According to reports provided to the Davidson County Health Department, this particular animal (a cow) has been under quarantine orders since late March, after a calf in the same pasture tested positive for rabies. No other information regarding this case has been provided to our department at this time.
Please continue to be vigilant and take precautions if you see a wild animal around your home or neighborhood. Rabies is a deadly virus to any mammal, including humans. North Carolina law requires that all domestic dogs, cats, and ferrets must be vaccinated against rabies by 4 months of age and kept current. If your pet comes in contact with a wild animal contact your veterinarian immediately. If you have handled an animal suspected of having rabies, contact your medical provider, as postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) must be started promptly to be effective.
The Davidson County Health Department will host a rabies vaccination clinic on May 26, 2022 at South Davidson High School in Denton. The clinic will provide vaccines from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. Animals must be at least 3 months of age to be eligible and vaccines will cost $9 per animal.
