Lexington Senior High School Hall of Famer Cory Holt hosted his fifth annual football camp on Saturday, June 24 at his alma mater’s football stadium. According to Holt, this was “by far our best camp yet.” Ranging from grades third through twelfth, 127 campers were in attendance. Coaches and former players assisted Holt in conducting drills that focused on blocking, route running, passing, coverage, offensive and defensive plays.
After drills were completed around 11:30am, players were treated to a speech by LSHS alum and HBCU National Champion, NaSheed Peoples. The Lexington native who won a championship with his alma mater, North Carolina Central University, shared with the team of listening ears brief insight into his journey from Lexington to the championship stage. Detailing a path filled with ups, downs, adversity, doubt, resilience and triumph, Peoples encouraged the younger generation to listen to their parents and mentors, believe in self and make life adjustments along the way. A big “oooooh” was heard throughout the crowd when Peoples pulled out his championship ring.
Despite the heat of the day, Holt noted “the 4:30am wake up was well worth it. It’s always an honor to serve this community and work with our youth. None of this would be possible without the 30+ volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning to give back. It was also special because my cousin Anthony, was able to volunteer and be active again after receiving his kidney transplant earlier this year, and celebrating his birthday Saturday.”
In addition to thanking volunteers, Holt issued a huge thank you to Hibachi Me for providing lunch to the campers, and our sponsors; Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, Food Lion, Mantle Realty, Conrad & Hinkle, and the many others who donated. Lastly, he shared he’s “thankful for Coach Morman for his dedication and commitment to bringing our football program back, and LSHS administration for allowing the usage of their facilities .Until then, as the late great Coach Charles England would say, #BeSomebody ”
Next year’s camp will be held on Saturday, June 29th.
