Press Release: DC Commissioner Chris Elliott sworn in on state board
Davidson County Commissioner Chris Elliott Sworn In As Board Member of Statewide Association of Counties Guilford County, N.C. – The North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) Board of Directors held their first convening October 20-21 under the association’s 107th president, Burke County Commissioner Johnnie Carswell, kicking of a new board term.“ This group of county leaders will provide direction to our association, one of the few organizations in North Carolina that represents every single resident,” said Carswell. “This is a crucial time as counties work to collaborate on addressing the overdose crisis through the use of national opioid settlement funds.” During the meeting, board members were sworn in to represent counties from across the state. As part of this new board, Commissioner Elliott of Davidson County was sworn in as a director to guide the NCACC. District 11 covers Davidson County, Rockingham County, Guilford County, Alamance County, Caswell County and Randolph County
“The opioid epidemic is ripping through North Carolina and leaving a trail of sick and grieving people in its wake,” said Commissioner Chris Elliott. “That is why I am so proud to be apart of this honorable group of elected ofcials. The NCACC will raise awareness of addiction and hopefully spur action in local communities. I want people all over this state to appreciate that together, we are more powerful than this epidemic. Opioid addiction has had a devastating impact on our state, and we continue to urgently address this crisis, We’ve made progress, but there is still much work to be done to educate people about the dangers of opioids, prevent addiction, and expand access to treatment centers. The NCACC can't be defined merely as an association, it's a team, resource and tool to be shared and utlized across the 100 counties of NC. In the same spirit of the NCACC core values, I will support and assist our law enforcement agencies, public school systems and our judicial branches here in district 11 to the best of my ability so help me God."
Board members heard a presentation on the state of the economy delivered by Dr. Mouhcine Guettabi, Associate Professor of Economics at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and received a briefing on the association’s work assisting counties with planning for and utilizing national opioid settlement funds. President Carswell’s provided an update to the board on his presidential initiative, “One More Thing,” which is focused on empowering North Carolina counties to invest opioid settlement dollars for the greatest impact. The board also heard updates on legislative and fnancial matters.
