Thomasville Medical Center receives 'A' rating

This makes Novant Health the largest healthcare system in North Carolina to ever achieve the highest mark for safety and quality across all of its hospitals. The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit that evaluates the safety, quality and patient experience provided by hospitals across the country.

“Novant Health is committed to setting the standard for safe, quality patient care,” said Dr. Eric Eskioglu, executive vice president and chief medical and scientific officer for Novant Health. “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, our care teams continued to come to work each day with a goal to provide the highest quality care while prioritizing safety for both patients and team members.”

The Leapfrog Group has recognized Novant Health’s longstanding commitment to safety and quality by assigning A’s to 11 of its hospitals including Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center.

Letter grades from A to F are assigned to U.S. hospitals based on their ability to prevent errors, injuries, accidents and infections, and improve patient satisfaction.

The health system expanded on its commitment to safety and quality in 2019 by establishing the Novant Health Institute for Safety & Quality, which focuses on patient outcomes and safety, clinical excellence and infection prevention. Recent initiatives that have led to continued improvement in safety and quality include:

  • An investment in electronic hand hygiene monitoring systems, which positioned all Novant Health facilities to meet or maintain The Leapfrog Group’s updated hand hygiene standards.

  • Focused education for clinical front-line staff on patient safety indicators, reducing complications after surgery.

  • An expanded partnership between physicians, nursing teams and pharmacy teams to ensure accurate medication lists and safe medication administration.

“We are honored to be recognized by The Leapfrog Group once again as one of the safest health care systems in the United States,” Eskioglu said. “Our team of physicians, nurses, advanced practice clinicians, pharmacists and clinical team members utilize data, analytics and artificial intelligence to predict and prevent errors and infections before they happen, while also developing best practices to improve patient safety, quality and satisfaction.”
