Explore the “Oceans of Possibility” with Summer Reading through the Davidson County Public Library
Davidson County Public Library invites all children, teens, and adults to participate in this year’s
Summer Reading Program, which is themed Oceans of Possibility. “The heart of the public library is reading. The Summer Reading Program is our largest single effort to promote reading and literacy in the county. We believe making it fun and encouraging participants to choose to read what interests them leads to better results and helps avoid the summer slide,” said Sheila Killebrew, Library director.
Summer reading has long been a tradition to promote literacy and knowledge during the months without school. It is an opportunity for children, teens, adults, and their families to expand their minds, learn new things, and engage their imaginations.
Kickoff events are as follows Lexington, June 4 th from 10AM-2PM, Thomasville, June 11 th @10AM, North Davidson, June 17 th @3:30PM, West Davidson, June 6 th @6PM, and Denton, June 13 th from 6PM-7:30PM. Registration for kickoff and the summer reading programs can be completed by contacting a local branch.
Each branch of the library system will offer exciting programming that revolves around “Oceans of Possibility.” Activities include crafts like seashell candles and ombre beach bags, fly fishing, storytimes about pirate ships and mermaids, and movies about the sea. Listen to the sounds of the ocean with Freegal (a streaming music platform), dive into a great beach read on Libby (an e-book and e-audiobook app), and listen to an e-audiobook 1,000 leagues under the sea with Hoopla (similar to Libby). Some locations will offer the opportunity to learn more about the ocean, wetlands, and aquatic creatures by partnering with outside institutions like the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science and North Carolina State Parks.
Those who participate in summer reading programs are eligible to win different prizes. More information about Davidson County Public Library, The Summer Reading Program, locations and hours, and library resources is available at co.davidson.nc.us/274/library.
