Fatal Crash on I-85 in Davidson County leaves one dead, one injured

A fatal collision on Interstate 85 near mile marker 89 claimed the life of one person and left another seriously injured on Monday afternoon.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 3:07 p.m. when a silver Toyota Highlander traveling northbound ran off the left side of the roadway into the median. The vehicle continued moving north in the median before striking a concrete bridge facing and support beam. The impact sent the SUV down an embankment next to the railroad tracks.

The driver, Ann Bomberger Kelly, 73, of Bahama, NC, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for treatment.

Tragically, the front-seat passenger, Woodrow Watson Kelly, 85, also of Bahama, NC, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Authorities closed the roadway for approximately two hours while they conducted an investigation and cleared the scene. No further details regarding the cause of the crash have been released at this time.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials urge drivers to use caution when traveling in the area.
