*Editor’s note - Results of the May 17 election will be certified by canvass on Friday, May 25. Until then, all results are unofficial.

Lisa Hathaway, a former special education teacher at Lexington Senior High School (LSHS), has shared with Davidson Local that she will be the new Ward 4 representative on the Lexington City Schools Board of Education. During Lexington’s municipal election on Tuesday, May 17, Hathaway received the most votes (114) of the plethora of write-in candidates that were submitted. Previously, no resident filed to run in Ward 4 before the filing period ended in February.

Andrew Richards, director of the Davidson County Board of Elections, shared with Davidson Local that the canvass to certify the results of the May 17 election will take place on Friday, May 27 at 11am. It will be held at the Bord of Elections office and is open to the public. The office’s address is 945 N. Main St. Suite A Lexington, NC 27292. The State of North Carolina will hold its canvass to certify on Thursday, June 9.

Hathaway, who resigned from LSHS on April 26, issued the following statement: “I resigned before I even thought about the school board. I was contacted by several people to run for Ward 4 since I had resigned. I resigned due to me being in graduate school where I’m pursuing a Masters in Clinical and Mental Health Counseling. I have such a passion for this school and the kids here. I have three children in the system and I want to see this school district thrive and be a beacon of light in this community. I live here and have been at the high school for five years teaching special education. I am very passionate about our special education students in the district as I also have a special needs child. I am looking forward to being apart of a board that could be a change agent in our community. These students need a lot of love and compassion, something I am very passionate about. We need to meet the kids right where they are on their journey.”
