From Sen. Jarvis' Desk: November 12, 2021

Dear Friends,

I had the privilege to preside over skeletal session one day this week.

A vote on the budget is expected for next week as the process of negotiating comes to a close for the session. Governor Cooper has stated that there was some good negotiation on money for education, but the budget was still lacking Medicaid expansion. Republican leadership is believes that if the Governor vetoes the budget, they have the necessary votes to override.

A Union County Judge ordered the executive leadership of the state to withdraw 1.7 billion dollars and spend it on his and Gov. Cooper's preferred policy items. Senate Leader Phil Berger & House Speaker Tim Moore released a statement conveying that they would not comply as they've sworn an oath to the constitution to act as legislators not as a part of the judicial branch.

Davidson County Schools have voted to give school employees a $4,500 bonus in order to help retain staff as we continue to experience labor shortages. The leadership also wanted to reward those who had stayed on staff throughout the pandemic as a thank you for all of the hard work that staff has done throughout these trying times.

In district this week, there will a Mt. Gilead Town Manager Meet and Greet on Monday November 22nd at 5pm. Additionally, Andrew Richards was named to the Interim Board of Elections for Davidson County in place of Director Ruth Honeycutt.

Congratulations to Davidson County Manager, Casey Smith for receiving his ICMA Credentials! Mr. Smith is one of over 1,300 local government management professionals currently credentialed through the ICMA Voluntary Credentialing Program.

Yesterday our nation celebrated our Veterans, and again, I want to thank all of those who have served. Your service can never be repaid in full. It was great to see our some of our young people from Davidson County Schools, Abigail & Drew Page, being involved in the ceremonies! Thank you to the cities of Lexington and Troy for allowing me to attend your Veterans ceremonies!

As always, thank you to our numerous constituents who continue to write, call, or email our office. I will never stop fighting for you

Senator Steve Jarvis,
