From Sen. Jarvis' Desk: November 5, 2021
Dear Friends,
This week the budget negotiations have continued between the House, Senate and Governor. It is our hope that a deal will be reached soon.
In addition, the redistricting process is wrapping up and new Senate, House and Congressional maps have been presented. The NC House has approved the maps presented by the NC Senate. These maps and further information regarding the redistricting process can be accessed at NCleg.gov
Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed House Bill 264 on Monday night that would have limited the powers of the executive branch. Cooper said in a statement that emergency decisions “should stay with experts in public health and safety, not a committee of partisan politicians.” Cooper has used the power of the veto 64 times since 2017, the most of any other Governor in NC history.
State labor commissioner, Josh Dobson, has raised concerns about new federal COVID-19 vaccine rule. Commissioner Dobson said "Our compliance officers should be spending their time working with employers to prevent injuries, illnesses and fatalities at construction sites and manufacturing facilities rather than knocking on doors to check an employer’s vaccine records."
North Carolina received the top ranking in Site Selection’s 2021 Top State Business Climate. With one of the fastest growing economies in the country, North Carolina continues to see more jobs, higher wages, and more investments coming into the state.
I am saddened to hear today of the passing of Davidson County Board of Elections Director, Ruth Huneycutt. Ruth was a devoted public servant and a friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
We were thankful to be joined by Lt. Governor Mark Robinson in Raleigh last Friday for the "Return America" rally on Halifax Mall. Thank you to the Lt. Governor for all your hard work!
Also last Friday I had the opportunity to visit one of our great public schools in District 29, Montgomery Central High School, and present a scholarship on behalf of Spectrum News to Senior Ben Harmon. Congratulations Ben and keep up the great work and thank you to all at Montgomery Central for the warm welcome!
As always, thank you to our numerous constituents who continue to write, call, or email our office. I will never stop fighting for you.
Senator Steve Jarvis,
NC District 29
