Garden Club hosts ‘Floriculture Division’ for over 50 Years!
The Davidson County Fair is drawing near and Village Home & Garden Club members have been planning the ‘Floriculture Division’ display for several months. Floriculture Division includes tables and shelves filled with amazing potted plants from cacti to African violets; combination plantings such as succulent groupings and ‘fairy’ gardens; beautiful and fragrant rose specimens; cut annuals and perennials in all shapes, sizes and colors; and this year’s educational display about growing gourds and using them to make unique bird houses. These wonderful exhibits are not just from garden club members. The public is urged to put what their green thumbs have produced on display so that everyone can admire and learn from them. There are cash rewards as well. Some entrants, such as Rose Society members, gather their winnings to donate back to their group. (That’s a good fund-raising idea for any organization.)
If you are interested in entering any type of exhibit at the fair, there are procedures that must be followed. You can go to the Davidson County Fair website and click on ‘Fair Book’ for details. (www.davidsoncountyagfair.com) Printed books area also available at the Extension office at 301 East Center Street. Many do not realize that the fair is not sponsored by Davidson County, but by the Kiwanis Club. It is a non-profit agricultural fair and all proceeds go to support youth projects of the Kiwanis Club, including their camp for disadvantaged children.
Come out to the fairgrounds, not only for the carnival food and rides, but also to wander through the exhibit hall to enjoy the art, crafts, food, field crops and floriculture on display. Opening day of the fair is September 19th, but bring your entries on the 18th. Village Home & Garden Club members will be there to sign you up!
