The slogan on the boxes is simple and straightforward: The need is constant. The gratification is instant. Give blood.
For decades, the American Red Cross has been hosting blood drives across the country. Started in 1941, under the direction of Dr. Charles R. Drew, the National Donor Service was initially constructed to collect blood for the United States military during World War II. It was used to save thousands of lives.
In 1948, the first blood program for civilians began and continues to this day. Currently, the American Red Cross conducts whole blood, power red, platelet, and plasma donations. Details about each type of donation including how long the process takes and the ideal blood types are listed on their website.
With a pandemic still plaguing our country and severe weather cancelling blood drives across the country, the need for blood donations is high. If you’re looking for ways to give back and you’ve never considered blood donation, now is a perfect time to start.
