Happy Juneteenth
Juneteenth celebrations in Lexington reached a brand new high this year with the addition of numerous events and programs that were planned to commemorate and celebrate the joy of the holiday.
Also often referred to as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, Juneteenth acknowledges June 19, 1865. The day that the word reached slaves in Texas that slavery had ended two years and a half years prior. To commemorate the end of slavery, families of African descent gather together at picnics and outdoor events to share the bounties of summer and the promises of independence.
For generations Juneteenth was acknowledged as an unofficial holiday but after gaining momentum and popularity with every passing year, it became a national holiday in 2021. Juneteenth is only now receiving the reverence and attention that it deserves.
Thank you to the local community and to all of the organizations and countless individuals that make the 2024 Juneteenth Holiday a success. You helped to preserve, inspire, spread and rewrite history.
