Highlights from the NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet
It was standing room only at Commons on the Green in Lexington Saturday evening for the Thirty-Seventh Annual Lexington NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet, which celebrated local excellence.
The evening was hosted by Rosa Terry and began with uplifting songs and scriptures. Mayor Jason Hayes welcomed the attendees and Judge Rosalind Baker spoke eloquently of the importance of the occasion. Other speakers included Sharon Hargrave, Dwayne Ingram, Reverend Brenda Wyatt, Belinda Clark, Jean Washington and Lexington City Manager Johnnie Taylor.
Reverend Thomas and Elder Tina Wyatt delivered a very informative presentation concerning the importance of mental health and the beautiful voice of Alicia Taylor filled the venue with inspirational songs.
After a hearty meal the evening concluded with an awards presentation where The Hargrave Foundation, Anna Hayes and Chevon Burton each received The Shoaf-Crump Community Service Award.
Lewis Michael, who is one hundred years old, was the recipient of The Lexington NAACP Helping Hand Award which honors the memory of former NAACP president, Elder Gloria Cross.
The Freedom Fund supports the local community by providing resources such as scholarships, social activities, support to non-profit organizations and assistance to families in need.
