Hispanic Heritage Month: Unidos - Inclusion for a stronger nation
This is the theme for this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month. Background on this month, the observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. We would like to clarify, 5 de Mayo is NOT Mexico’s independence day!!
On Monday, September 12, 2022 during the city council meeting, the City of Lexington proclaimed September 15 to October 15 Hispanic Heritage Month. A way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month is to recognize the contributions and efforts of Hispanicamericans. Then on Sunday, September 18, 2022 outside Lexington City Hall, the city of Lexington had a Banner unveiling ceremony to honor community leaders that made a positive impact to the hispanic community. On Monday, September 19, 2022, during the city council meeting, the City of Thomasville issued a proclamation to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. We were floored by the enthusiasm of the Mayor of Thomasville and the city council in order to celebrate this month.
We thank the city of Lexington and Thomasville for including and recognizing their residents of a diverse background because they are part of this community and this is the place that they call their home.
