Honoring Memorial Day together, locally
Memorial Day is for honoring and mourning the teaming number U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
The federal holiday originally began as Decoration Day, established in 1868 as a time for all Americans to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. It is believed that May 30th was chosen because flowers are in bloom everywhere during that time of May. From 1868 until 1970, Memorial Day was observed on May 30th. In 1971, Memorial Day began being observed on the last Monday of May and was also declared a national holiday by an act of Congress. The holiday is still occasionally referred to as Decoration Day.
Davidson County boasts a number of monuments which are in commemoration and remembrance of veterans from numerous wars throughout history.
Without the sacrifices made by these countless brave soldiers, we as Americans would not have the ability to enjoy the freedoms that we practice daily. Nor, would we be the shining example that we have been as a country to the rest of the world for generations.
It is because so many gave their lives in defense of the idea of America that we have reached this point where we are fortunate to continue the idea consciously, together with pride.
Celebrate this Memorial Day and every day with American Pride, which means that we all celebrate and love our country and each other, so that the lives that were sacrificed for our freedoms were not in vain.
Here is a very interesting website that shares the information for all local monuments: https://docsouth.unc.edu/commland/monument/465/. This website is a great tool to plan a day out exploring Davidson County.
Happy Memorial Day.
