Political Opinion: From the desk of state senator Steve Jarvis

Political Opinion: From the desk of state senator Steve Jarvis

Dear Friends,

It has been a busy second week of December, with happy holiday events, productive work projects and preparations for legislative goals all keeping me focused. I hope your weeks have been equally fruitful.

The U.S. National Guard is well over 300 years old this week. Our National Guardsmen and women serve our country during critical times at a moment's notice. I am so thankful that we can continue to rely on their domestic protections when we need their expertise and care.

The data has been calculated on the volume of bills the General Assembly worked on during Long Session. I briefly summarized what we accomplished and included a few more statutes that recently became law on December 1st. While this isn't a complete list, the laws I have detailed last week and in this edition were ones that received the most public attention from voters.

The General Assembly’s House Select Committee on Oversight and Reform met on Monday regarding auto insurance regulation and to hear more about the North Carolina Reinsurance Facility. The North Carolina Child Safety Task Force also met this week to discuss annual data from child deaths in our state.

The election filing window remained open until Friday the 15th. The deadline for candidates to sign up is noon. Many people have thrown their names into the ring this week. The Governor and Lt. Governor races are becoming quite large!

The Davidson County Commissioners announced that funds have been approved for a new high school to be built on the Thomasville High School's current site. This much needed improvement will be so exciting for the students and families in our area when it is complete.

Davidson County libraries are so excited about the reading program that can provide a trip to the circus for free. Children who fill up their reading cards between now and February 2nd are eligible for a ticket. Our area libraries enjoy this partnership with the circus to encourage childhood readers.

Christmas trees have been grown, celebrated and revered as an enduring symbol of the Christmas season. Since NC is one of the top producers of Christmas trees, I thought it would be interesting to find out how the evergreen tree became so well-known for its holiday presence.

We have another round of Christmas events going on this weekend in the district. Dress warmly, we are getting closer to the official start of winter! If you prefer to stay home, look up at the night sky to see the Geminids meteor shower--you might be able to see up to 10 shooting stars per hour--that's a lot of wish-making opportunities!

If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at

(919) 733-5743.

I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!
