MLK parade to carry on through small chance of snow Monday

MLK parade to carry on through small chance of snow Monday

Martin Luther King, Jr. day may be Davidson County’s first chance for light snow this season, though the outloook is still primarily for rain and cold, which will make it challenging for those marching in the annual Dr. Marttin Luther King, Jr. parade.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a chance that rain or snow could begin after 4 a.m. Monday, meaning skies will be cloudy. Temperatures will dip to a low of just below freezing overnight, so residents will wake up to a cold morning. The chances for rain or snow continue until about 1 p.m., when any precipitation should become rain. Temperatures will reach a high of about 42 degrees Monday but wind chill factors will make it feel closer to 26.

The MLK parade, which steps off at 1 p.m. from Lexington Senior High School, will carry on rain or shine down Main Street as the chance of precipitation is only 30 percent. Attendees are encouraged to dress for wet, cold weather but organizers say they still hope people will come out. That chance remains consistent overnight, meaning any snow that might fall will not accumulate.

Because the wind chill is expected to make temperatures feel so much lower, local animal control officers encourage residents to bring animals indoors when possible. County ordinances require those who care for animals to provide housing or enclosures “wherein the animal can be protected from extremes of weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.) and allowed to remain dry and comfortable during inclement weather.”

There is a slight chance of rain and snow again Tuesday morning before 9 a.m, changing to all rain before it lets up about 10 a.m. As the day goes on, the sun will come out and highs will top out at about 43 degrees, but that wind chill factor will once again make it feel below freezing.

North Carolina mountains anticipate more snow in this particular storm, and overall, Davidson County is not expecting any significant snow this year, similar to last year when the recorded snow depth was zero.
