Filing periods open next week for a few races
The delayed Lexington City and 2022 Primary elections will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2022. On the Lexington City Schools (LCS) Board of Education, seats in Wards 4, 5, 6 and the county (candidate must live in the area of Davidson County that resides in the LCS district to run for this seat) are up for election. In Lexington, Wards 1, 2, 3, 4 and the mayoral seat have terms that are expiring
Although the LCS board and city of Lexington elections are on the same date, they will have two different filing periods. The school board can file beginning Monday, December 6 at noon until Friday, December 17 at noon. Potential candidates interested in running for mayor of Lexington and the city council can file between Monday, January 3 at 12p.m. and Friday, January 7 at 12p.m. If the LCS school board and the city of Lexington utilize the same ward map, why do they have different filing periods?
According to Terra Greene, city manager for Lexington, and Andrew Richards, interim Davidson County Board of Elections director, the redistricting of the voting wards made it possible for the Lexington municipal elections filing period to be held in January.
Since Lexington didn’t meet the original deadline to have the ward map finalized, they aren’t able to have a December filing period. However, the school board’s special legislation didn’t allow for this switch regarding their elections. Although both will use the same ward map, the varying legislation results in will different filing periods.
In Davidson County, officials such as commissioners, judges, clerk of court, register of deeds, etc. will file beginning Monday, December 6 at noon until Friday, December 17 at noon. The primaries for these elections will take place on Tuesday, March 8, 2022. Filing period for Davidson County Schools Board of Education candidates is Friday, June 13, 2022 at 12p.m. until Wednesday, July 1, 2022 at 12p.m. The deciding elections will be on November 8, 2022 with the rest of the midterm elections.
