Press Release: Lexington awarded $600,000 for Critical Gas Tap Station Project

The City of Lexington has been awarded $600,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending funds to repair and rebuild the West Lexington Tap Station, a crucial component of the city's natural gas infrastructure.

This funding, made possible through the support of U.S. Senator Thom Tillis, will enhance the reliability and safety of natural gas in Davidson County.

The West Lexington Tap Station, constructed in 1967, urgently needs repair and renovation to ensure the continued safe and efficient distribution of natural gas to the region's residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Lexington Utilities will utilize the funding to completely replace the inlet and outlet piping from Williams Transco and upgrade all metering, pressure regulating instrumentation, communications infrastructure, and other pressure relieving systems.

"We are deeply grateful to Senator Tillis for his strong support of this important project," said Jason Hayes, Mayor of Lexington. "His funding assistance will enhance the safety and reliability of our natural gas system, safeguarding the well-being of our community and help to add capacity for future economic development."

The West Lexington Tap Station plays a pivotal role in the natural gas distribution system of Davidson County, and any malfunction or damage to the station could pose significant safety risks and disrupt gas delivery to customers in the area.

By investing in repairing and reconstructing this essential facility, Lexington aims to maintain the integrity and reliability of the natural gas infrastructure, prevent gas leaks, and ensure continued access to affordable energy for businesses and residents.

This funding is part of the recently passed FY24 Congressional Appropriations package.
