Lexington City Schools expands Spanish Immersion Program

Lexington City Schools is delighted to announce the expansion of its highly successful Spanish Immersion program to South Lexington School, commencing in the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year. This expansion reflects the district's dedication to delivering outstanding educational opportunities, equipping students with the skills necessary for a global society.

Presently available at Pickett Elementary School for grades K-5, the Spanish Immersion program has gained widespread acclaim for nurturing bilingualism and socio-cultural competence among students.

Responding to increasing demand, Lexington City Schools will introduce two Spanish Immersion Kindergarten classes at South Lexington School. This expansion aims to meet growing interest while upholding the program's established excellence.

The transition to South Lexington School will exclusively impact Kindergarten, with grades 1-5 continuing at Pickett Elementary School.

To ensure a seamless transition, Superintendent Dr. Nakia Hardy has confirmed that no students will be relocated. Current Kindergarten students will smoothly progress to 1st grade at Pickett Elementary, while the new Kindergarten classes will integrate into the South Lexington School community.

The two additional Kindergarten classes at South Lexington School are scheduled to commence with the start of the 2024-25 academic year on August 12, 2024.

Lexington City Schools assures the community that there are no planned changes to the curriculum or structure of the Spanish Immersion program. The district remains committed to maintaining the program's effectiveness in language acquisition and cultural understanding.

In expressing pride in the Spanish Immersion program, Dr. Nakia Hardy emphasized its role in preparing students for a global society. "Students who are bilingual benefit academically and socially. We want all of our students to have multiple opportunities when they graduate from Lexington Senior High School prepared for a global society and marketplace," said Dr. Nakia Hardy.

Lexington City Schools is committed to providing a quality education that prepares students for success in a rapidly changing world. With a focus on innovation, collaboration, and excellence, the district strives to empower students to reach their full potential and become responsible global citizens.
