As the sun was setting Thursday evening, the energy was rising on Hemstead St. near Lexington Senior High School (LSHS). Lined along the road were parents, family, friends, alumni of LSHS and community supporters who were eager to celebrate the soon to be graduates at a parade in their honor.

The parade, which began last year as a way to safely celebrate graduates during the COVID-19 pandemic, is quickly evolving into a new Yellow Jacket tradition. Armed with thunder sticks, megaphones and signs, attendees beamed with pride as the seniors slowly took in all the excitement on the route.

Complete with an escort from the Lexington Police Department, the Class of 2021’s uniqueness was on full display. There were seniors dressed in their caps and gowns. Some were driven by parents which allowed them to be able to stand in their vehicles with their heads visible through the sunroofs. Some rode on top of cars. Some flew flags from their native countries. Some were still in their track uniforms having made it back from their meet just in time for the festivities. There was even a senior dressed as a cheerleader who kept the crowd hype as she yelled through the megaphone her grandmother used when she cheered for LSHS in 1974.

The LSHS Class of 2021 will graduate Friday, May 28 at 7 p.m. in Philpott Memorial Stadium. A ticket is required to attend.
