Lexington Farmers Market: Pie, Oh my
It is Saturday at the Lexington Farmer’s Market. Do you feel that hint of fall in the air? It's the perfect time of year to enjoy pie and ice cream. Baked with fruit harvested over the summer and topped with homemade ice cream made from local milk, it's an incomparable dessert. Is your mouth watering yet?
.
At 10 a.m. there will be a pie and ice cream tasting in the kitchen area, featuring peach crumb pie and peanut butter pie from Go Rustic Artisan Breads, and homemade vanilla and chocolate ice cream from Crossings Farm made with Lutheridge milk. All the Things Bakery will also be offering samples of pumpkin pie at her booth.
As we anticipate the arrival of fall, don't forget that honey is a seasonal product just like summer produce. If you use honey regularly in your household (or if Honey Bee Day last weekend got you fired up about honey and made you a new fan), stock up on local honey now so that you will have it on hand throughout the winter! It is worth the investment, because honey is extremely shelf-stable. Pro tip: if you notice your honey crystalizing, it is still good, especially if it is sealed and can be re-liquefied in a warm water bath. You can purchase honey this weekend from Abbott's Creek Honey, SandyCreek Farm, and Sunflower Hill Farm.
Do you have SUN Bucks benefits this summer? (SUN Bucks is a new grocery benefit that offers families $120 per eligible school-aged child for groceries during the summer. Find out more about SUN Bucks here.) We accept these benefits at the market - the process is the same as our regular SNAP program! See the graphic below the vendor list for more info.
