Lexington Middle School girls basketball team brings home championship
The Lexington Middle School girl’s basketball team has demonstrated themselves as a force to be reckoned with. After going undefeated for the last season, they managed to capture the title of Davidson County Regular Season Champions. The eleven player team is just now realizing the magnitude of the win as they reap the rewards and accolades that follow.
The win cemented the team as history makers at Lexington Middle School, as they are the first girl’s basketball team at the school to ever bring home the trophy.
Led by a staff of dedicated and caring coaches which include Vernard Williams, Angela Pittman, Nathaniel Cole and Alexis “Shay” Fowler. It is obvious that great leadership helped shape the performance of the team.
The enthusiasm was still alive on March 05, 2024, as the team was welcomed by the Lexington City School Board of Education to each receive commemorative, custom framed basketball jerseys during a special presentation at the school board meeting.
The team has also been recognized by the Mayor Hayes and the Lexington City Council with a Proclamation which acknowledged the win and also named February 26, 2024 as Lexington Middle School Girls Basketball Championship Day in Lexington. A moment which the members of the team will never forget and an action which inspired each to want more.
The team has been making the local rounds and giving special appearances around town, having recently been celebrated at a Lexington Senior High School basketball game. The champions have also been giving back to the community by volunteering to read to students at South West Global Academy.
Achieving the perfect season and winning 16-0 games did not come easy for the team.
The hard work and dedication actually began in April 2023 when the team kicked off athletic training and practice. Their Summer break was consumed with two separate basketball camps which required each player to attend the camps three times per week. “The girls are gathering the fruits of their labor. This is a big accomplishment because this particular team is the first to ever do this at Lexington Middle School,” stated Head Coach Williams. “This team of players continued to improve with every year, winning more and more games until they finally achieved championship status,” remarked the proud coach.
The cohesiveness and closeness of the team is evident when you see them all together.
It is obvious that they made the decision to work together to make their dreams come true.
Zoe Henderson who is an eighth grader said, “I am really proud of the team and the amount of personal growth that we have all had.” Eu’ Niyaha Huling-Holt said, “We have accomplished something great for girl’s basketball in general and especially for Lexington basketball. Boys mostly win everything, but now we have done something awesome for girls.”
Several members of the team, which is composed of seventh and eighth graders, agreed that the win is a definite self esteem booster.
Davidson Local salutes this local championship team.
