Lexington Parks and Rec teams up for bridge building competition

Explore STEM programming and put your engineering skills up against others from around the Triad! Bridging the Triad is a FREE event, designed to get kids and adults interested and engaged through a bridge building contest. All supplies and instructions are provided at no cost, and kids and adults can showcase their ingenuity, creativity, and engineering skills as they build a bridge using only 100 popsicle sticks and Elmer's glue. How much will your bridge hold? Pick up your packet and instructions from your local rec department. Top bridges will qualify to move on to regional finals and compete for a shot at glory!

Participants compete as individuals in four age groups, 8-10, 11-14, 15-17, and adult. Bridges are judged based on how much weight they will support, divided by the total mass of the structure. This is a two-part event with six local competitions happening on February 4, 2023. The top three bridges in the youth categories and the top bridge in the adult category will advance on to the regional competition held at Deep River Recreation Center in High Point on Saturday, February 25, 2023, to coincide with National Engineers Week.

The Parks & Recreation departments from Greensboro, High Point, Kernersville, Lexington, Thomasville and Winston-Salem are collaborating to get people engaged and exploring Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). This is the fifth year of this contest, and participation has grown each year. Bridging the Triad is a great way for families to stay engaged and have fun with each other, especially during the cold and dreary winter months, while also engaging the minds and imaginations of kids and adults alike.

Local competitions will be held at the locations below. Contact your local department for information on packet pickup. Follow along on Facebook for updates, pictures, and more!
