Lexington school board honors track champions

The Lexington City School Board of Education extended access to their first open meeting during COVID with a presentation from athletic director Ronnie Beverly honoring the 2020 Lexington Senior High School girl’s track champions.

Beverly explained that due to COVID they we were unable to recognize the success of the student athletes on the track and and in the classroom. He noted several of the student athletes plan to continue their education at Norfolk State University, Howard University and UNC-Greensboro.

The team won the NCHSAA 2-A 2020 State Championship in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Beverly presented state championship rings to coach John Kinzer, Zavia Calvin, Ny’Lasia Brown, Aquariah McIntosh, Alyssa Thompson-Rowe and coach Tim Holt.

The team also won the NCHSAA 2021 2-A State Championship in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. Coach Kizner said, “I am just happy what the girls accomplished in the even last year, going through the COVID situation and bouncing back accomplishing what they did …a few weeks ago.”  

The Norfolk State bound Thompson-Rowe was also honored for her first place finish in the 55 meter dash at the 2020 2-A indoor track championship and being named the 2021 Central Carolina Conference Female Student Athlete of Year.

The team was applauded by the board for their years of accomplishments. “They have kept the mantle going as far as Lexington Athletics for the last six, seven years,” said Beverly.
