Meet Our Intern: Nierra Coleman
My name is Nierra Coleman. I was born and raised in Lexington. I am currently a senior at Lexington Senior High School as well as dual enrolled at Davidson-Davie Community College where I am studying for my associate degree in Early Childhood Education. After graduation, my plan is to attend either Shaw University or Livingstone College majoring in social work or elementary education. Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my grandparents. They read a lot of newspapers, and they always watched the Fox8 News channel. Therefore, I stayed up-to-date with events happening in the area around me. I’ve always loved the idea of journaling. Many times, I find myself listening to music and typing/writing about my feelings. Being able to feel like I have someone to talk to, without consistently having to verbally communicate with anyone, has always brought me peace.
I was able to gain knowledge of the internships my school had to offer through Mr. Nathan Tongel and Mrs. Joyce Hargrave of Lexington Senior High, to both of whom I want to give the biggest shout-outs. Without them, I don’t think I would ever have this opportunity. Initially, I never thought I would even have the chance to potentially make a difference in my community. I’ve always loved seeing what the city does for its residents, but I never knew how to become involved. I feel this is the perfect opportunity for me to share the information I know with the people around me and gain knowledge from everyone else's perspectives. I am super excited about many things, but I am most excited to be able to gain experience in public speaking. Being that there may be multiple chances I must be willing to communicate with someone from public officials to perhaps children, this opportunity will help me gain insight on how to have an appropriate conversation with the citizens of Lexington. I am also thrilled to be in a position where I am able to help my community gain more knowledge about what’s going on in the Davidson County area.
From this internship, I hope to gain experience in, as previously mentioned, public speaking. It is indeed a skill you are able to take with you anywhere in life. This is one of the skills I feel like is so hard to obtain, but once you have it, it could change your life. I also would like to be able to understand my community from a journalist perspective. Most of all, I’d like to be able to come out of my comfort zone and get more active and familiar with the people around me. I believe the people I will be working with will undoubtedly be able to bring out that side of me. I am beyond ecstatic and thankful to be able to experience this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I am definitely excited for what’s to come next.
