THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Patients in and around Davidson County now have increased access to see a lung specialist for asthma, emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Novant Health Pulmonary Medicine – Thomasville, which opened in March, is conveniently located on the Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center campus. This brand-new outpatient clinic is designed to offer diagnostic and treatment services for patients, close to home.

“We’re very excited to improve access to pulmonary care services here in Davidson County,” said Jon Applebaum, president and chief operating officer of Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center. “While we have treated lung disease for more than 40 years at Thomasville Medical Center, the goal of the new clinic is to not only expand those services beyond the walls of the hospital, but to provide more comprehensive care for our patients in this community. Ultimately, if we can diagnosis and treat patients sooner, it will reduce complications and hospitalizations down the road.”

The clinic is staffed by Dr. Wesam Yacoub, a double-board certified pulmonologist with more than 10 years of experience. Yacoub earned his medical degree at the University of Connecticut and then completed an internal medicine residency program at Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center in New Jersey. From there, he completed a fellowship in pulmonary disease critical care at the University of Missouri. Outside of the clinic, Yacoub also provides inpatient care for critically ill patients at Thomasville Medical Center and Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center.

“While the act of breathing is easy to take for granted – most of us do it 22,000 times a day – it’s a matter of real concern for patients diagnosed with lung disease,” said Yacoub. “As a critical care physician, I’ve seen firsthand the devastating impact that it can have on patients and their families. My goal for this new clinic is to establish long-term, whole-person care relationships with each one of my patients. I want them to know that they’re not alone and that we’re going to work together to manage their disease, so it doesn’t take over their life.”

The clinic serves patients aged 18 and older diagnosed with a variety of lung conditions including asthma, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, cystic fibrosis and COPD. On-site diagnostic testing will include bronchoscopies and pulmonary function tests.

The clinic also works in close collaboration with the Novant Health Cancer Institute - Thomasville, located on the same medical campus, to help co-manage lung-function care for patients diagnosed with lung cancer.

Novant Health Pulmonary Medicine - Thomasville is located at 207 Old Lexington Road, behind Thomasville Medical Center. It sees patients Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 336-474-4780 or visit Novanthealth.org/pulmonarymedthomasville.

Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center first opened as City Memorial Hospital of Thomasville in July 1930 with 31 beds. In 1997, it joined Novant Health. Over the years, the medical center has grown with the community and today serves as a state-of-the-art 146-bed hospital, offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, birthing rooms, cancer treatment and emergency care for patients in and around Davidson County.
