Novant Health sets near and long-term environmental sustainability goals
Novant Health announced it is building on environmental sustainability initiatives already underway by setting more ambitious, science-based targets to create a more sustainable future for its patients, team members and communities.
To achieve these goals, Novant Health will further embed environmental sustainability initiatives into its culture, including decision-making and day-to-day actions. From comprehensive building retrofits and renewable energy to systemwide recycling and composting and supplier engagement, all departments and levels will be engaged in achieving these goals.
Novant Health’s organization wide commitments include:
By 2030:
Reduce direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 35% or more.
Require partners covering 67% or more of our supply emissions to set their own targets.
Divert 67% or more of waste from landfills.
Reduce water use by 10% or more.
By 2050:
Reduce direct and indirect GHG emissions by 90% or more (“net zero”).
Divert 90% or more of waste from landfill (“zero waste”).
Reduce water use by 25% or more.
“Novant Health exists to improve the health of our communities, one person at a time. Because the climate crisis is the greatest human health threat of the 21st century, our commitment to community health means we must do our part to safeguard planet health,” said Matthew Stiene, Novant Health senior vice president of construction and facility services. “We have charted a path to achieve these goals by relentlessly pursuing purposeful innovation, resource efficiency and human-centered care. By integrating sustainability into all business decisions, Novant Health will develop into an even more sustainable health system capable of improving human health – both inside and outside the walls of our facilities.”
Prior work of Novant Health's sustainability committee, which was formed in 2021, has already resulted in energy efficiencies, including reduced utility expenses.
