Opinion: Joel's Job Tips #6 and #7
Cast a wide net
Want to get the best offer for your next new job?
If you are in the job market, here is a proven way to increase your market value and boost your income level. While searching for your next new job, be sure to cast a broad net, and reach out to at least 10 companies. Research those companies, narrow your search and deepen your interactions with five of them.
Then strive to get at least three job offers and let them know what the top offer is in hopes the other companies will match, if not surpass, the top offer. Companies want someone who is in demand.
Implement this strategy and you will boost your future income levels.
Three things every young worker needs to acquire: Work Experience, meaningful job references and wise mentors
A Job Paradox. Can’t get a job without experience and can't get experience without a job.
With apprenticeships, volunteering and internships, area youth can now acquire some meaningful work experiences that can help prepare them for future career development. It’s important for students to acquire mentors who can later serve as references to help them land future employment.
Finding a mentor willing to offer insight and corrective coaching is critical. It’s better to find someone who provides tough love advice rather than empty praises. Workers need to be open to receiving constructive criticism. A friend will tell you if you have salad in your teeth before getting on TV. That's what a good mentor does by pointing out faults, not to tear down but to lift up.
