On Tuesday evening, March 29, the Lexington Parks and Recreation Department hosted a public meeting at the Edward C. Smith Civic Center. The meeting was in regards to the city’s proposed recreation center. Revealed in 2014 as part of the “Re-Creation of Recreation” plan, the project is in the early stages.

Residents in attendance were given a presentation by representatives from consulting firm, BRS Architecture (based in Colorado). Afterwards, each person in attendance was asked to participate in Dot-Ocracy where sticky notes were placed on boards representing components one would like to see in the center. They included a walking track, gymnasium, senior adult lounge, classrooms, maker space, indoor playground, specialty innovation space, eports/gaming room, outdoor fitness area, cardio/weightroom, outdoor gathering space and a swimming pool.

Attendees were also encouraged to submit answers to five questions:

  1. How do you describe where you live when you are away from Lexington?

  2. What places or events must visitors experience when they are here in Lexington?

  3. Why do you live in Lexington?

  4. How do you want to be perceived as a community?

  5. How do you not want to be perceived as a community?

Later this month, a survey will go live where residents can share their input. Another public meeting will be held Tuesday, May 3 at 6pm at the Civic Center.
