Obituary: Kiwana T Crump

February 20, 1942 - December 19, 2023

Kiwana T. Crump, 81, was born to General JC Talbert and Alberta Redwine Talbert and departed this life peacefully at the Hinkle Hospice House on Tuesday, December 19, 2023.

Kiwana graduated from Dunbar High School, class of 1960. As a teenager she worked as a babysitter and at Yarborough's Restaurant. Kiwana graduated from Bennett College in 1964. She took pride in being a Bennett Bell as she would tell stories of her college experience. Kiwana was a longtime member of Ezekiel AME Zion Church. She would attend special occasions with her husband Bobby Crump, Sr. at Yadkin Star Baptist Church. Kiwana was active in the development of Jack and Jill of America Lexington NC Chapter. She was a member of The Daughters of Isis Abdallah Court #166 of High Point, NC where she served as Commandress for several years. She was instrumental in developing the Isiseretts Drill team for young girls. Kiwana believed in keeping youth active in activities to cultivate their lives. She was also a member of Eastern Star and Golden Circle. Kiwana loved traveling, shopping, sewing, watching sports, crafting and attending Bible study.

Kiwana was the first full-time African American teacher at Lexington Senior High School. She loved encouraging students to learn and follow their dreams. Kiwana, affectionately known to many as Ms. Crump, taught in the Lexington City School System for 30 years. She taught Biology, Consumer Math and Physical Science. She retired in 1996.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bobby Crump, Sr; three brothers: General Wayne Talbert, Don Re Talbert and Kenneth Talbert, Sr. and two sisters, Evelyn T. Roberts and Dorothy R. Talbert.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Karen Crump of Martinsville, Va, Bobby Crump, Jr. of Huston, TX, Pamela Crump and Julia Crump both of Lexington, NC; two brothers, Paul (Betty) Talbert, Sr. and Dwight Talbert, Sr.; three sisters: Irma Talbert of Greensboro, Brenda Talbert and Norma Talbert both of Lexington; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; special friends, Ernestine Hairston, Macie Anderson and Rosa Koontz and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023 at 12:30pm with family visitation at Noon at St. Stephen United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at South Lexington City Cemetery. Public viewing will be Tuesday from 1:00 to 5:00pm at Roberts Funeral Service.
