Two weeks ago, health officials granted emergency use authorization for a pediatric COVID-19 vaccine for 5 to 11 year-olds. Once they heard the news and received their first shipment of vaccines, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Pediatrics – Lexington team members went right to work scheduling vaccines for younger children.
“Children are very aware that this is affecting them every single day and affecting their families and friends. I talk to my patients about the importance of the vaccine and how it can protect them, keeping them healthy and at school,” said Dr. Mike Kidder, provider at Pediatrics - Lexington.
“My son was one of the first on the list. I wanted him to be protected at school and as he participates in activities. This is our shot at preventing further virus spread and keeping our most vulnerable populations well,” said Kidder.
According to NCDHHS, during the most recent surge, pediatric cases of COVID-19 rose by about 240% nationally. Parents and pediatricians hope the first wave of doses will mean fewer kids missing school and fewer pediatric hospital visits.
Currently, Pediatrics – Lexington is offering vaccine on Tuesdays and Thursdays or when the patient is in for a visit. Parents can schedule appointments through their child’s MyWakeHealth account or by calling the clinic at 336-249-4911. The clinic is located at 101 W. Medical Park Drive, Lexington, NC 27292.
