Political Opinion from a GOP Perspective: “The Nonexistence of Nonpartisan Elections”

Political Opinion from a GOP Perspective: “The Nonexistence of Nonpartisan Elections”

Each and every election that is held is partisan whether we like it or not. Each candidate is partisan whether we like it or not. It is part of human nature to take sides and it is important that voters know what side a candidate is on.

So-called “nonpartisan” elections appeared, for a time, in statewide judicial races in North Carolina. Judicial candidates were not listed with a party on the ballot and voters, therefore, had no idea where the candidate stood on important issues. Those of you that have voted in North Carolina for any length of time know the confusion of which I am referring to. Fortunately, this period of confusion is behind us as the races are now partisan.

However, “nonpartisan” elections persist in some locations across North Carolina, including municipalities right here in Davidson County. Why shouldn’t voters know who and what they are voting for? If a member of either party is elected to office, will they abandon their party’s platform if he or she is elected in a “nonpartisan” election? It is very unlikely.

“Nonpartisan” elections are nothing more than a shroud for liberalism. Liberals can sneak into office without having to disclose their true identity to voters. If you seek validation of this point, consider the tremendous gains that Republican candidates have made in the now partisan statewide judicial races.

Everyone is partisan and that’s just fine. It’s natural. Voters, though, deserve to know who and what they are voting for. No election has ever been “nonpartisan” because it’s not possible.
