Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - April 1, 2022

Dear Friends,

It's been another quiet legislative week here in Raleigh but as usual we're still staying busy and working for you all. Let's roll right into this weeks newsletter:

Attorneys for the North Carolina General Assembly filed a notice of appeal and a motion for a stay with the trial court following a decision by a three-judge panel that would allow felons to vote.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently conducted a study researching the reasons why rural hospitals were closing their doors after many years of service to their respective communities throughout the entire state.

Lumber costs are still soaring compared to normal years. This is causing housing prices to be higher than usual, further creating a complex housing market.

The Hunt Institute hosted the 19th annual Holshouser Legislators Retreat in Durham N.C. this past weekend, raising awareness of issues related to education. Many members on both sides of the isle were in attendance and were able to discuss pertinent issues.

A Joint Legislative Committee met this week in regards to HB 277. Registered nurses and advocates have been pushing for the HB 277, also known as the SAVE Act which would give advanced RNs full-practice authority. This has been an presented as an effort to help struggling hospitals and clinics around the state that are facing labor shortages.

We're excited to announce that the Senate Page Program registration has opened up. This is a great way for upperclassmen in high school to get a glimpse at what the North Carolina General Assembly process consists of. Please contact our office for details. I would love to have youth from my district represented.

The North Carolina GREAT Grant application deadline has been extended through May 4th 2022. This is a $350 Million grant to help rural counties such as Davidson and Montgomery get broadband connection infrastructure.

Governor Cooper signed the Budget Technical Corrections Bill which should ease supply chain issues relating to the building industry. I am proud to have represented the construction industry and consumers for passing common sense legislation such as this in a time where it's much needed.

I had the pleasure and honor of attending the 2022 Special Olympics at Central Davidson High School. The camaraderie around this event is the highlight of my year, seeing such joyful and enthusiastic youth! I want to give a special thanks to all who helped make this amazing event happen. It was great to see so many friends and honor all of the participants.

If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at (919) 733-5743.

I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!

NC District 29
