Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - April 6, 2023
I would like to extend a message of happiness and hope for the upcoming Easter weekend. I hope that you are able to spend time with loved ones, either celebrating with traditions or simply enjoying each other's company!
After another busy week in Raleigh, I have a lot to share with you about exciting and helpful legislative activity that will positively impact your life.
There have been several noteworthy announcements from the majority party this week, and those are detailed below.
As you may have heard, a big shake up occurred on the House side of the chamber. Rep. Tricia Cotham announced that she will be joining the majority party due to burdensome and stressful pressure from within her former party. We are glad to have her and welcome her insight and wisdom for the future.
Senate Pro Tem Phil Berger released a statement regarding some great tax relief news to look forward to. NC has one of the lowest income tax rates in the Southeast, and this latest proposal will help solidify our state's status.
This week, the Senate had a big push to complete our bills to meet the filing deadline. I was able to put forth a number of bills that are ultimately designed to ease bureaucratic logjams for citizens, protect children and residents and provide commonsense safety measures in a variety of areas. Please use the Bills Button below to see more!
I attended a press conference this week to promote one of the bills which I co-sponsored, Fairness in Women's Sports Act. I look forward to seeing how this bill can protect female athletes and allow them to compete with each other in all school sports settings.
The NC Department of Informational Technology has important news for residents of Davidson County. Hundreds of residents and businesses will benefit from increased internet infrastructure that would be implemented in partnership with Spectrum.
The Rural College Leaders program, which Davidson-Davie Community College is a member of, held a meeting recently. Discussions focused on how best to promote community colleges located in 10 different rural areas around NC.
The North Carolina Teaching Fellows program shared its accepted students' list and I want to give a shout out to a Lexington student. I am so pleased to hear about students who are willing to work hard in the field of education!
Further highlighting the success of the students in our area, Golden Leaf has selected a scholarship recipient from South Davidson High School. Way to go,
More good news about jobs in area--Nucor Steel needs more applicants for entry-level, well paying jobs!
