Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - April 8, 2022
Dear Friends,
It's been an exciting week for North Carolina, as we saw two teams from our state go to the Final Four. Things have been a little quieter than that here in Raleigh, but we're still getting a lot done.
First, we'd like to say congratulations to the Men's Basketball teams at UNC and Duke. It's Duke Head Coach Mike Kryzyzewski's final season and UNC Head Coach Hubert Davis' first. Please join me in congratulating these two teams for their exceptional performance in the March Madness Tournament.
In an update on the felon voting case, the N.C. Court of Appeals placed a temporary hold on the registration of convicted felons until all appeals are resolved, per the request of leaders here at the General Assembly. The plaintiffs in the case have asked the state Supreme Court to sidestep this hold.
The National Parks Service announced that it will be doing repairs on one of North Carolina's most famous roads, the Blue Ridge Parkway. These repairs will likely go through the summer and end in the early fall, just in time for the changing leaves.
The National Institutes of Health traveling research program is coming nearby to Winston-Salem, N.C. The program aims to gather data from communities that have historically not been represented in medical research.
At the request of the Department of Health and Human Services, Gov. Cooper issued an executive order that would extend emergency COVID-19 provisions. This is after Republican leaders have asked that executive orders relating to the pandemic cease, since case numbers and hospitalizations have severely declined.
The General Assembly reconvened for a matter of minutes on Monday after one of the longest sessions in state legislative history. We're continuing to work hard even out of session too but please note our office is still open Monday through Friday 9am-5pm.
After a tremendous climb in gas prices in the past month, gas prices seem to be leveling out, according to survey data from GasBuddy.
In my district, the global steel company Nucor announced its plan to start a $350 million capital project, a steel mill in Lexington, N.C. We are excited to welcome the company to Davidson County and look forward to the 180 new jobs it will create.
The state Department of Transportation plans to make improvements to approximately 3 miles of N.C. 109, between Hearne Farm Road and Pee Dee Road in Montgomery County. Improvements include widening of shoulder sections on both sides of the road. If you would like to ask questions, give feedback or receive materials relating to these improvements call the project phone number (984-205-6615).
If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at (919) 733-5743.
I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!
