Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - December 9, 2022

I hope y'all had a wonderful week as we move into the middle of December!
This week I had the pleasure of meeting with Thomasville City Schools Superintendent, Dr. Chris Kennedy. I look forward to working with Dr. Kennedy for the betterment of North Carolina Public Schools and especially those within our communities.
We have a long history of conserving North Carolina’s natural resources and we don’t plan on slowing down. In the coming 12-16 months we estimate conserving nearly 4,500 acres of forest and farmland which will include a 210 acre property in Montgomery County that will be transferred to the Uwharrie National Forest, expanding public lands.
North Carolina Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson, a 41-year-old serving his first term in the statewide office, won’t seek a second one. Dobson said he’ll finish his current term. He made the announcement Tuesday morning, during a monthly meeting of North Carolina’s Council of State, a collection of state government’s statewide elected officials.
This week, the city of Lexington had their Uptown Christmas Parade, a favorite Christmas tradition of mine over the years! It was wonderful to see the community come together in the Christmas spirit, and see all the great town of Lexington has to offer this time of year.
Carolinas AGC (CAGC), the construction industry association in the Carolinas, has announced that the CAGC Foundation has officially launched the Construction Business Academy - a construction business development program designed to strengthen minority, disadvantaged and women-owned businesses to ensure their sustainability and growth.
Fly High Lexington hosted their annual Christmas party at Davidson County Airport! I had a great time and enjoyed some awesome food! Located in the central Piedmont region of North Carolina, KEXX offers easy access to Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, and is less than an hour to Charlotte.
The North Carolina Justice Center announced the appointment of Reginald T. Shuford as its next Executive Director. Shuford is from Wilmington, NC, and is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law. Since 2011, he has been the Executive Director of the ACLU of Pennsylvania.
The state has sent out its annual invitation to the Governor’s home for the holidays. The historic North Carolina Executive Mansion, which has housed state governors since 1891, is opening its doors for its annual Holiday Open House this weekend, starting Thursday and ending Saturday night.
Hundreds of people were rattled by an earthquake late Wednesday in the North Carolina mountains 100 miles west of Charlotte, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The ripple effect was felt at least 271 miles away, in the southeastern part of the state, officials say.
Lexington native, North Davidson High School graduate and NC State kicker, Christopher Dunn, was named the winner of the Lou Groza Award Thursday night during the Home Depot College Awards show on ESPN. The award is named in honor of Pro Football Hall of Famer Lou Groza, a nine-time all-pro and winner of eight championships.
The Thomasville Tourism Commission would like to invite everyone to come out and experience a magical day in Thomasville this Saturday, Dec. 10 for its annual Christmas parade. The parade begins at 11 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. on Main St.
The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem will present A Christmas Carol, adapted by Charlie Lovett from the novel by Charles Dickens, opening on Friday, December 9, at the Reynolds Place Theatre, 251 N. Spruce Street in Winston-Salem.
