Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' desk - February 18, 2022

Dear Friends,

It finally seems to be warming up here in Raleigh, even though the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil predicted otherwise. As always, we have been hard at work here at the General Assembly, working on matters such as mask mandates and the continuing process of redistricting.

Gov. Cooper has called for an end to the mask mandates in school districts and municipalities around North Carolina. As your state senator, I have been fighting this battle alongside my other Republican colleagues, trying to get the mask mandate burden off of our children and give the power back to the parents. This is a big win for the citizens of North Carolina, and I am glad to have proudly represented my constituents on the right side of this issue.

The N.C. Senate approved the new voting maps for North Carolina's House, Senate, and Congressional districts. Furthermore, the three-judge panel that is overseeing the redistricting case has appointed three special masters, outside experts, to assist in redrawing maps.

In regard to the ongoing debate about the expansion of Medicaid, my colleagues that serve on the Joint Oversight Committee on Access to Healthcare and Medicaid Expansion anticipate that there will be a vote in the upcoming months. They are thoroughly assessing financial data and want to make fiscally responsible decisions.

Tragically, after a three-day search off North Carolina’s coast, a search crew found the bodies of seven hunters who died in a plane crash Sunday. The plane’s cabin was found nearly 55 ft. below sea level and four miles off Drum Inlet. Please join us in praying for those affected by this tragedy.

For those interested in scholarship opportunities - The Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research has launched the Rural College Leaders Program in partnership with Achieving the Dream. This program is designed to develop leaders and improve the outcomes of students attending 10 qualifying community colleges in rural North Carolina.

Also, if you are a high school senior or community college transfer interested in attending a four-year institution in N.C., don’t forget to apply for the Golden LEAF Scholarship. It’s an incredible opportunity for qualifying students.
