Dear Friends,

We hope you have had a busy and efficient week! As we are nearing the (hopeful) end of this long session, we have been burning the candle at both ends. There are exciting updates on all levels of government, as well as some super cool updates from the district!

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled on Thursday that affirmative action, a UNC-Chapel Hill and Harvard admissions practice that takes race into consideration, was unconstitutional because it violates the 14th amendment. Read the details of the case in sections below!

Both the Senate and the House overturned the veto of the NC Farm Bill this week. Agriculture is the largest industry in North Carolina, and is a major staple of District 30, making this overturn a huge success in protecting the success of North Carolina industry. I am happy to have supported the 2023 Farm Bill, and consequently the overturning, because agriculture affects every single North Carolinian. Read more, including words from Senate Agriculture Chairman Senator Brent Jackson, below.

The Senate had the privilege to hear SB 49 - Parents Bill of Rights for concurrence on Thursday this week. I applaud the bill sponsors for championing such an important bill, ensuring our children's curriculums are age appropriate.

Another important bill that was heard and passed on the Senate floor on Thursday was SB 91 - Amend Rule 4/Acceptance of Service. On the surface, this bill may seem unimportant to my constituents, but I encourage you to read part 2 of the bill. Titled Make Unauthorized Street Takeovers Unlawful, this section comes as a response to an increase in street take overs in the district that poses large risks to our police officers, bystanders, and those driving cars recklessly. Read more below to stay up to date on the new language added and how it impacts our district.

For those who are currently attending or will soon attend college, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be making some changes to their application, as well as various qualifying criteria for grants. check out what is changing below!

Now for some district news! The Lexington City Council has entered into an agreement with Preservation North Carolina which will allow the city to continue operating the Old Dunbar School Park as a city park.

The County Sports Hall of Fame announced it's 2023 class after a four-year hiatus due to COVID. The induction ceremony is set to take place on October 21st at the Davidson-Davie Community College.

Keep Davidson County Beautiful, a local chapter of Keep America beautiful, is set to host weekly litter sweeps when the weather permits. Read below for more details on how you can get involved with keep our community pristine.

We are mourning the loss of a community icon, loved by all. Mrs. Hanes of Mrs. Hanes' Moravian Cookies has unfortunately passed away. Her legacy of amazing baked goods, most notably her Moravian cookies, allow her to live on throughout the community and around the world.

We hope you have a safe & restful weekend surrounded by family and friends. Please be safe this weekend and have a great Fourth of July!
