Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - July 7, 2023

Dear Friends,

We hope you had a great long-weekend with your families. The Fourth of July holiday celebrates the ratification of the Declaration of Independence, a signal of hope and a beacon of freedom for the United States. Thank you to those who have fought for the liberties that are so vital to the success of America.

The Senate took a break this week as we wind down our long session. The budget is still in deliberation, but be on the lookout for a final product to be voted on soon! (we hope)

While we took a break, SCOTUS has been busy with ruling on several important cases that have been heard over the past year. Major decisions involve affirmative action, free speech, and student debt loan forgiveness.

Governor Cooper has used his veto stamp again this week, vetoing three bills. These bills are HB 574: Fairness in Women's Sports Act, SB 49: Parent's Bill of Rights, and HB 808: Gender Transition/Minors. Read more about why he vetoed these bills and where they head next. There are currently 8 Senate bills that have been sent to Governor Cooper this past week.

Students attending schools within the UNC public system, as well as dozens of other colleges and universities statewide, will find out this month if their student IDs will be valid identification for the 2023 and 2024 elections. Read below for more details on when a decision can be expected.

We would like to extend congratulations to Brandi Milam who was the 2023 recipient of the Dr. Kenneth M. Petersen Memorial Award. Milam has dedicated 22 years of hard work to being a Pharmacy Tech for Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Lexington Medical Center. Milam serves as the lead certified Pharm Tech for the Lexington Medical Center campus.

A Mocksville native recently won his court-case after he was denied the proper disability accommodations to take his state certified test required to become a firefighter.
