Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - June 16, 2023

Dear Friends,

I hope your family and friends are enjoying getting started with summer activities, breaks from school and longer daylight hours!

I feel as if we are burning the candle at both ends in the General Assembly as we work hard on finding compromises within the Budget process. Early mornings and late nights are what's needed to reach our Budget goals.

Meanwhile, committees meetings are still being held. After crossover occurs, we also keep track of our bill movements throughout the House committees while we are listening to House bills in the Senate, so it requires vigilance and dedication to details in order to make legislative headway.

I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of recognizing and honoring the significant impact that Former Senator Stan Bingham had during his time in the Senate. Senator Bingham's family, co-workers and other former members joined our session as honored members in the gallery this week.

I also enjoyed meeting Davidson County's D.A.R.E. Youth representative for our state, Riley Elliott and her mother, Shannon. They stopped by on their way to a D.A.R.E function at the coast and I was honored to host both for a chamber visit.

Continuing with actions on the Senate floor, I have provided a quick summary of the bills that were discussed and the actions taken in our On the Senate Floor section below.

Two bills are receiving a lot of attention this week and they will affect the voting process for everyone. The goal of SB 747 and SB 749 is to strengthen and improve voter laws to ensure fairness and enhanced access so you can cast your vote with confidence. I am providing a details of how the changes will benefit us all in the section below.

Also, a bill that I proposed, SB 616 Environmental Health Associate, is being rolled into HB 628 and is moving quickly to the finish line. I am pleased to offer this option for a new pathway that will help ease some of the processing burdens residents have experienced with permitting needs during construction.

Congratulations to Davie County for earning a designation as an All America City! In a recent announcement, Davie County was chosen by the National Civic League as one of 10 winners nationwide. We love how Davie County is continuing to lead the area with integrity, innovation and civic-mindedness.

Davidson Medical Ministries is holding a prescription drug turn in event. Please gather up any old, unused prescription drugs and bring them to the location mentioned below. Disposing these drugs properly helps keep them from being used irresponsibly by people that shouldn't have them.

If you are need of dental care but need help affording it, there is a new practice in Davidson County that will take care of you. A variety of ways to finance your visits will be available with Dr. Shah's office in Tyro.

Father's Day is coming this weekend and there are many options for celebrating with Dad in the local area. I hope that you take time to enjoy your father's presence in your lives and honor those fathers that have left their legacy with your families.

If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at (919) 733-5743.

I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!
