Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - June 24, 2022
Dear Friends,
As we're busy while finishing up all of our legislative duties before the end of short session, we have a lot to talk about! Let's get into our newsletter for this week:
We held a State and Local Government Committee Meeting with a long to-do list. We were able to get a lot accomplished in hopes of getting several bills on the floor.
I still have two local bills to get through this short session and had a few successful votes in Rules and State and Local Committees this week. These bill are expected to be heard on the floor in weeks to come.
We heard several bills on the floor this week, including one of my own. Along with legislation we heard two senatorial statements, one in honor of Grace Episcopal Church of Lexington.
I was thrilled to join Grace Episcopal Church of Lexington in celebrating their 200th anniversary. I was glad to host a group from their congregation and honor them at the General Assembly.
The President Pro-tempore of the State Senate, Phil Berger, won a Federal Supreme Court case this week regarding Voter ID laws. This was an amazing feat for him and the people he represents as well as the issues he advocates for.
A landmark Supreme Court Case, Roe v. Wade was overturned this morning making history in the headlines. More Federal Supreme Court decisions are expected to be released next week.
Senator Steve Jarvis (Davidson & Montgomery) released the following statement regarding the ruling:
"Today's decision in the Dobbs case overturning Roe v. Wade is a victory for the American republic. It returns power seized 49 years ago by unelected judges to its rightful place, with the elected representatives of each state. This is a significant victory in the long fought battle to protect the innocent lives of the unborn. I look forward to continuing to work towards a day when all Americans, born and unborn, will enjoy the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
