Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - June 9, 2023
Dear Friends,
This week has been nothing but meeting after meeting trying to get the budget finalized. We are glad to stay busy here at the General Assembly, and hope you all have had a great week staying busy, as well! Below are some updates from our week at the General Assembly, some great bills to look forward to, as well as some updates from district!
Tuesday, June 6th marked 79 years since Operation OVERLORD was successfully administered on the beaches of Normandy, France. D-Day is a day where we not only celebrate the victory of the Allied Forces, but also take time to remember those who laid down their lives in the name of freedom.
As a Co-Chair for the State and Local Committee, this week was my week to Chair. Below, you can find the bill that was heard and the outcome. More bills will be heard in this committee next Tuesday.
In Commerce and Insurance Committee, I had the honor to stand beside Rep. Brody as he presented HB 488 - Code Council Reorganization and Variable Code Amendments. This bill is the companion bill to my bill SB 378 - Code Council Reorganization and Variable Code Amendments. As a fellow veteran in the construction industry, Rep. Brody and I are proud to be primary sponsors on our respective bills to improve the building industry for more affordable and streamlined construction.
On the Senate floor, we heard several local bills, as well as a few more overarching bills that pertain to North Carolinians statewide. You can find more details on what we heard in the chambers, as well as their fate in becoming law, in the section "On the Senate Floor" below.
Speaking of Senate floor, I had the privilege to host and introduce Dan Stamey of Lexington to fellow Senate members as I read his senatorial statement during our Thursday session to commemorate 50 years of Stamey's BBQ. It was great to have Dan and his family in Raleigh to commemorate a monumental milestone.
Now for some district news. A renewable energy company has pointed their sights to Thomasville to expand its footprint in North Carolina. The company plans to open a 69-acre solar farm titled Thomasville Solar.
The Life Center of Davidson County is currently holding their annual campaign, and it is not too late for you to donate! Find more details on their campaign below.
The Davidson County Public Library has just announced their theme for their 2023 Summer Reading Program. This year's theme is "All Together Now" and aims to highlight the values of kindness, friendship, and unity.
In this week's Discovering the District, we visit the rich history of Richard Childress Racing at the Richard Childress Racing Museum. Learn more about the Childress family and their fascinating passions below!
If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at (919) 733-5743.
I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!
